Zoey punched a whole in the already dieing training dummy, wishing she had something more substantial to hit. It was always hard when she was trying to train, since she kept killing the dummies. Zoey groaned when the dummy fell over, the straw all beaten out of it. Zoey moved onto the next one, when her phone buzzed. She kept it on vibrate so that way it didn't make noise when she was trying to be attentive in archery, or something. Zoey glanced at the phone, then shoved it back in her pocket, still buzzing. Her mortal friends could wait for another time to text her about the latest cute boy that happened to join up at there middle school. Zoey kicked the dummy lightly, snapping its arm in half. When are these people going to get REAL dummies? Zoey moaned, patting the dummy on the head sympathetically. ––––––– • • • –––––––

~ ~ ~ Duncan trudged up the hill that let to the training field. He yawned, tying his bandanna under his bands. Duncan tied his scabbard to the belt loop on his jeans, slipping his daggers into his back pockets. He looked over the horizon, and saw nothing but endless, freezing water. It was quite useless, because you couldn't even dip a finger in it, much less swim in it, without becoming a popsicle. He had learned that the hard way when he was still a newbie at the Beach. Duncan pulled his gaze from the sparkling waves and turned his attention towards the training field. What should he do first, knife throwing, archery, sword fighting...Just then he noticed a girl about his age ripping the training dummies apart. And with ease, as it seemed. One word popped into his head. Ares. He thought aloud. He had never much cared for the children of the god of war, but somehow this girl didn't seem as...blood-thirsty as some of the other Ares demigods here. But then again, maybe he was wrong. He started down the hill, veering off towards the archery range. Then a thought struck him. Hadn't the Hermes kids said something about a game of capture the flag happening that night? And this wasn't your regular, 'tag, your it' kind of capture the flag, either. It was demigod capture the flag, the kind where you need full body armor and multiple weapons to not be pulverized. Duncan shivered. If this was true, and the people in the Hermes cabin weren't full of crap, then he should be going over to sword fighting or dummy training. He remembered the girl over by the dummies and decided that this might be his chance to see if he'd found the one civil child of Ares. He chuckled to himself and changed direction to the dummy arena. Zoey giggled as the dummy fell apart as she withdrew her hand from the mild punch she had thrown into the dummy's chest. Zoey sighed, taking off her gloves and tossing them behind her. She would take a little break before demolishing some more dummy's. Zoey stretched her front leg out in front of her, stretching her muscles, then popped back up and stepped over to where her gloves lay resting against her brown purse with burnt orange lining inside. Her friend had gave it to her as a parting gift before she moved to 'California'. Zoey unzipped the purse and gripped a bottle of water. She had several amongst all the other candy and food stashed away. She wasn't panting for breath and needed water, but she was thirsty. Sweeping her hair out of the way with the back of her unoccupied hand, she saw a figure walking towards her and the very dead dummies. Zoey shrugged and took another swing of water before setting it down and putting on her gloves again. She wasn't going to kill any more dummies though, considering the newcomer wanted some dummy's alive for himself, most likely. ––––––– • • • –––––––

~ ~ ~ Duncan nodded a greeting to the girl, though he realized it came off as more of a 'Thank you for not tearing apart all of the dummies.' He suppressed a laugh and started at the beginning of the remaining dummies, pounding them to fluff one by one. When he was done, his bandanna was soaked with sweat. He took a seat about arm's length from the girl and untied his bandanna, soaking it in the stream that ran down the hill. Duncan turned back to the girl and gave one of his lazy, charming smiles. Hey. He said simply, wringing his bandanna out and tied it around his forehead again. The cool cloth chilled his hot and sweaty skin. I'm Duncan. Duncan Truth. He introduced himself. He didn't really care if he came off like a dork, because he knew he wasn't one. He wouldn't really care if the whole entire world thought he was a dork, much less this chick. He smiled lightly to himself and thought about his little sister, who would be the only one on the Earth that would support him if everyone else turned against him. Zoey smirked, holding her bottle of ice cold water, condensation dripping down the plastic bottle. Want some? Zoey tossed it to him without waiting for an answer, seeing that he was having more of a hard time with killing dummy's then Zoey was. Zoey reached into her bag and pulled out a Twix bar she had snagged when sneaking into the mortal world. She took a bite into the yummi chocolate bar. For some reason, Zoey had always imagined the word 'yummy' with an i on the end instead of a y. Zoey glanced at Duncan, wondering if he would tattle on her like all the other stupid people in the camp. Instead of asking if he would rat her out, she dipped the Twix bar towards him and raised her eyebrows, seeing as her mouth was to full to ask if he wanted one. ~ ~ ~ Uh...thanks. Duncan was genuinely surprised by her generosity. She was indeed unlike the other children of Ares. He caught the water and the candy, nodding his thanks. Ratting her out seemed out of the question, for it never crossed his mind that candy wasn't allowed on training grounds. So what's your name? He asked, handing the remaining water back to her. Perhaps he was wrong about her being a child of Ares. Perhaps she was a child of Artemis or Athena...no. The way she tore apart those dummies and didn't break a sweat...she had to be a child of Ares. Zoey grinned and raised her water in a toast. The name's Zoey. She looked Duncan up and down, before saying, Who're you a child of? I mean, like, who's your god parent? She said. He wasn't a child of Ares, or Aphrodite, obviously. Zoey chomped a huge bite of Twix, her cheeks bulging from the chocolate, caramel, and crunchy bits. In her personal opinion, Twix was the best kind of candy next to Giradelli chocolate. She liked the mint kind better then the caramel kind, and many people thought her crazy because of it. ~ ~ ~ Duncan swallowed his bite of candy before blurting out his answer. Apollo. Hard to tell, right? But I guess my real talent is playing music. As I've noticed, that isn't really gonna get me anywhere in this place. He paused, realizing he was blabbering too much. He didn't want to come off any weirder than he already was. Though Zoey didn't seem like the type to judge, Duncan didn't want to risk looking like an idiot. What about you? He asked her, his deep green eyes focusing on her's. Though he had already guessed the answer, it seemed more polite to ask. Though Duncan had never been the type to make sure he had perfect manners, he had always felt more self conscious around the other demigods. Like he had to try that much harder just to not fall behind and be laughed at. He hated the feeling that nothing he ever did was good enough, but he had to live with it now that he was training here. ~ ~ ~

Ares. Pretty easy to figure out, huh? She said, crossing her legs. She liked him, because he wasn't like some of the other sniveling demigods around the place, and cringing at the site of a hyper child of Ares. She returned his gaze calmly, noting that his eyes were dark green. Some people on the beach had weird eye colors, but his was normal. Zoey took another bite of her Twix bar, catching a piece of chocolate that was falling with lightning reflexes. It was another perk of being a child of Ares - having great reflexes. She popped the chocolate in her mouth and waited as the chocolate melted down her throat before asking, So, how long have to been here?, gesturing with her remaining bite of Twix at the layout before them. ~ ~ ~ Duncan shrugged. Not long. Me and my sister, Lynn, have been here for a couple months. But they've been a lot harder than you might think... Duncan trailed off, waving off the question. He placed him palm on the back of his neck and smiled apologetically. Sorry. Anyways, I'm guessing your not as much of a newbie as I am?. Duncan scoffed at himself. Hell, everyone's not as much of a newbie as I am, even if they've been here longer than me. He chuckled and look down at his feet. He plucked up a piece of grass and twirled it around in his fingers until he had made it into a perfect bow. he handed it to Zoey and smiled lazily, brushing a lock of hair from his face. ~ ~ ~

Zoey raised her eyebrows as she took the bow, turning it around lazily in her hand. It was perfect in every way. Wow, nice. I couldn't do that to save my own life She said, flashing a crooked grin to Duncan. She plucked a blade of grass and tryed to fold it over itself, and make it a bow, but she ended up ripping it in half. She hesitated for a second before pretending to push them together repeatedly, saying 'Durr'. She grinned then threw them up in the air, where they floated away, picked up by a breath of nonexistent breeze. ————— • • • —————

~ ~ ~ Duncan laughed, watching her try to tie the grass. He smiled again, gazing at the training dummies. He should've been training this whole time. But the only place he really wanted to be was here, with Zoey. The girl he just met. He scoffed at his sheer stupidity. But for some reason all he could think about doing was talking to Zoey. He looked up at her, stealing a glance at her shining blue eyes. He almost blushed when she looked back at him. He cleared his throat and sat back up, muttering "So...". ~ ~ ~

So how do you like it in the land of the demigods? Frozen seas, cold sand, and fake dummies. She said throwing the dummies an exasperated glance. I wonder how they pay for all of them. Or what if they don't? She said, widening her eyes dramatically at Duncan. ————— • • • ————— <Sorry for the super-lame post, I just can't think of anything to say.>

~ ~ ~ Duncan laughed. "Volunteer dummies!" He said, still laughing. He turned from Zoey for a moment saw Kalonice coming out of Kletios's office. Had she gotten in trouble? Duncan scoffed. Kalonice, in trouble. That's a good one. She was basically a counselor already, though Kletios refused to talk about it. He was stubborn like that. But something about Kalonice's expression was different. She looked...grim, and angry. As she came closer Duncan saw that her eyes were red, like she had been crying. His eyes opened wide. I'll...um...be right back. He said to Zoey. Duncan and Kalonice had been friends since he had gotten to the Beach. She was really nice to him and treated him a lot different than the other demigods did. She had told him about her friend Damien that had gone on a quest for Poseidon. Duncan had only seen them around each other a couple times, but that was all he needed to get the message. Kalonice loved Damien. But seeing her now, it filled his heart with dread. Kalonice had told him that after he got back, she was going to tell Damien how she felt. And Duncan could only imagine how things had gone, judging on how she looked. He moved toward her, falling to to step beside Kalonice. "Hey. Whats wrong?" He asked. She didn't answer. "What...what did Kletios talk to you about?" He tried again. Okay you go - abandon me. She said, basically to herself. It wasn't like he heard her or anything. Zoey saw him go over to a girl with a very sad expression. Though 'sad' didn't quite cut it. The girl had the look about that she had had her heart ripped out, chopped into pieces, then put on pizza. Only, you can't quite make that one word, can you? ————— • • • —————
